WHAT IS A HOLTER MONITOR?
A Holter monitor (also known as an ambulatory ECG) is a small portable device which records your heart’s rhythm over a 24-hour period and identifies any abnormal rhythms over that period, which may include rapid abnormal rhythms (tachyarrhythmias) or abnormally slow rhythms (bradyarrhythmias).
During the recording period the monitor records every heartbeat (typically around 100,000 beats over a 24-hour period); when the recording is finished the ECG information is downloaded onto a computer and analysed and edited. Any abnormal events on the ECG can then be printed out in a comprehensive report for your doctor. |
