WHAT IS A SPIROMETRY TEST?
Spirometry is a simple procedure which measures your lung capacity and also how quickly you can breathe air out following maximum inspiration. The test requires you to breathe with maximum effort into a tube on a machine called a Vitallograph. You will then be given a bronchodilator drug called salbutamol (‘Ventolin’) and the test repeated after a few minutes and the results pre- and post- Ventolin compared to see if the bronchodilator has improved lung function. If the test is performed in association with a Stress Test it will be performed pre-exercise, post-exercise and finally post-Ventolin.
